How many kids are actually adopted in the U.S.?  According to the census:

“The 2000 census was the first census in which adoption statistics were collected. In 2000 the estimated number of adopted children was slightly over 128,000. In 2008 that number increased to nearly 136,000 children.

This number includes domestic adoption, international adoption as well as relative adoption (where grandma adopts her grandchild for example.)  Are these numbers higher or lower than you thought?
