Following are some statisics on adoption from the CDC:

Adoption and nonbiological parenting

  • Percent of females 18-44 years of age who had ever adopted a child, 2002: 1.1% (0.6 million)
  • Percent of females 18-44 years of age who have ever taken steps to adopt a child, 2002: 3.4% (1.9 million)

  • Percent of females 18-44 years of age who ever cared for a nonbiological child, 2002: 12.6% (7.0 million women)

Look at the difference between the number of women who have adopted (0.6million) and the numer that have taken steps to adopt (1.9 million).  So when folks tell you to “Just Adopt” it is a long difficult journey that sadly doesn’t always “work” for everyone who tries.
